COFAM PROJECT: WEBGENESYS’ COMMITMENT TO CLIMATE NEUTRALITY

For several years, Webgenesys has been developing COFAM (CO2 Footprint Authentication Module), a Mapping, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification system designed to assess forest CO2 sequestration through remote sensing technologies (satellite/Earth Observation data) combined with field surveys. The project aligns with Italy’s evolving regulatory framework on climate neutrality and is built on an infrastructure designed to ensure reliable and tamper-proof procedures for certifying the amount of CO2 absorbed by forests.

COFAM Project: Webgenesys’ commitment to climate neutrality

Through continuous monitoring of time-series data, COFAM enables the detection of forest growth and changes in forest assets caused by events such as wildfires or disease outbreaks. From an implementation perspective, the platform consists of a data collection, management and processing service that integrates geographic data and layers generated through dedicated surveys or derived from existing sources (such as cadastral records, land-use maps, elevation models, …).

COFAM adopts the CO2 sequestration assessment algorithms defined by the IPCC* and ISPRA*, while enhancing certain application-related aspects. Through its RegTech approach, the platform ensures audit-ready traceability, increasing the credibility and value of carbon credits, which can subsequently be registered in the Italian National Forest Carbon Credit Registry (RNCCF).

The project is scientifically coordinated by the University of Rome Tor Vergata and is funded by the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy under the Innovation Agreements programme. It involves the participation of Webgenesys’ R&D and ADUX teams.

* The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change. ISPRA (Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) is the Italian public authority responsible for implementing these guidelines and preparing the country’s official emissions inventory.
